The Good Ship - Avast! Wretched Sea

Drawing inspiration from Nick Cave, The Pogues and The Decemberists, Brisbane's The Good Ship focus on the seedier side of life and belt out rollicking, beer-swilling, folky sea shanties of debauchery on their debut album, Avast! Wretched Sea.

There is certainly no holding back when it comes to the subject matter here. Featuring songs with titles like 6000 Cocks, it's hard to know whether to get sweaty and sing along with their grubby tales or whether to take to their mouths with a bar of soap. Either way, there is no denying that, when they get it right, The Good Ship offer more than enough to suggest they are an absolute riot live. Also, to scratch the surface is to find a certain level of depth and poignancy to their songs.

It's seems a shame then that they are oh-so very focused on the carnal. Sure, the to-the-point lyrics are pleasingly shocking at first and are certainly mature rather than puerile, but it does still get a little tiresome the longer the album goes on. A little cock goes a long way, it seems. Still, floating in a sea of profanity, there are real glimpses of promise from a band that has only been around for a little over a year.
