Analogue photo exhibition, Brighton

We were lucky enough to be present at the preview of Analogue Brighton's photo exhibition the other day, where we were beguiled by work from a talented group of like-minded enthusiasts of analogue photography, all of whom are still using vintage and lomography cameras.

Analogue (organised by Collate Presents - who are a curatorial team based in Brighton) features the talents of Tom Welland  Lomokev  Adam Bronkhorst  25ThC  (of Bobbysix fame!) and Captainbonobo and brings together many images - largely of Brighton - in a variety of ingenious and interesting ways. Cross processing slide film, multiple exposures and film swaps are some of the techniques which present iconic shots of the grand old city through different eyes. What is especially refreshing about the exhibition, in an age when everyone thinks they are a photographer and can take a shot 100 times in order to get it right, is the sheer inventiveness of the photographers and the laborious lengths to which they go to create an out-of-the-ordinary image. And, of course, without the immediacy of digital technology, sometimes they have to wait weeks just to see if their efforts have been fruitful.

The exhibition is definitely worth your time and runs from now until the 27th April 12pm-5pm. You can find Analogue at Artist Residence Gallery, 33 Regency Square, Brighton, East Sussex, BN1 2GG

Here's a couple of snaps from the launch, attended by Bobbysix's Alice, Bobby and, of course, 25ThC (below):

Analogue photo exhibition hits Brighton!

Bobbysix's own 25ThC is taking part in a photography exhibition in Brighton over the next few weeks. Get along check out the awesomeness:

Over the past six months or so a group called Analogue Brighton on Flickr has brought together a talented group of like-minded analogue enthusiasts. All of whom are still using vintage and lomography cameras. These cameras combined with cross processing slide film, using multiple exposures and film swaps are producing stunning and original images.

There have been a number of recent meet-ups which have included night-time photo walks and light painting. It has now all culminated in the first combined exhibition – Analogue - presented by Collate Presents  who are a curatorial team based in the glory land that is Brighton.

After the success of CP’s previous exhibitions MULLITOVER and #offbeige which brought in a whopping 1000 visitors, press and special guests, they are back with a new and exciting show at Artist Residence in Brighton. Analogue will feature five of Brighton’s most talented lens-based artists who work with vintage and Lomography cameras.

This is no ordinary photography exhibition. This is your chance to witness the genius of technical and creative uses of the camera. The artists involved are: Tom Welland  Lomokev  Adam Bronkhorst  25ThC and Captainbonobo .

On Wednesday 21st March the doors will open to the press, as well as a guest list of Brighton-based galleries, creators, art dealers, academics and writers. The evening will offer the chance to get up close and personal to a selection of rare vintage cameras, as ever there will be a well-stocked bar and with a big thanks to LOMOGRAPHY there will be a raffle for your chance to win a Lomo Sardinia camera. The general public will be offered the chance to see this inspiring collection of works during the Open Exhibition on the 22nd March - 27th April 12pm-5pm. Come along with an open mind and expect to be inspired.

You can find Analogue at Artist Residence Gallery, 33 Regency Square, Brighton, East Sussex, BN1 2GG

Krate Krusaders Volume 2 - When The Needle Drops

Bobbysix.com's 25ThC gets his hip-hop on to review Krate Krusaders Volume 2. Here are his thoughts:

This is the second volume of featured artist releases from South West UK production duo Bad Habitz and 1 Step. It features a selection of well respected MC's from both sides of the Atlantic and, on the face of it, should be a good listen. However it falls down in a number of areas.

Hip-hop has always been about pushing boundaries, trying new techniques and sampling previously hidden sonic gems. The production here is pretty standard and on most of the tracks feels a little like hip-hop by numbers. There was very little head nodding going on at this end. On quite a few of the tracks the beat is far too prominent, meaning that the vocal is lost and it makes it difficult to follow the MC's flow. This may be simply a mastering issue but it does make it heavy-going. As a whole, it's unlikely to bear repeated listening and some tracks really grate on the ears.

Mamba has a nice laid back vibe. Sick Flow has a heavy beat and accordion sample which fit well with the vocals of Ramson Badbonez and Flitptrix. Put The Work In has a lovely Arabian feel and great lyrics from Sonnyjim. These are the few exceptions, but on a 17-track album, it's not nearly enough.

Jehst album launch at Fabric

BobbySix.com reviewer 25ThC went along to the offical launch party for Jehst's new album, Dragon of an Ordinary Family at Fabric:

Jehst, one of UK Hip Hop's legends hasn't released a solo album since 2006's Nuke Proof Suit, so his latest offering Dragon of an Ordinary Family has been eagerly anticipated. To launch the album, he put on an epic party at Fabric on 17th June and the place was packed with fans new and old. Micall Parkinsun warmed up the crowd briefly before Jehst - William G. Shields if we're being formal - came onto the stage to Starting Over - the first single off the album. The single was launched by a viral music marketing video portraying a fan secretly filming his postman who turns out to be Jehst.

Jehst swiftly moved through tracks from his back catalogue including People Under The Weather and Hydroblowback, interspersing them with new tracks. Most notable was his acapella version of new track England, a stark and poignant description of the current state of the country which ends with the line, "I still got love for the place that I'm living/But right now theres nothing great about Britain." Jehst then rolled into Weed and pulled up onto the stage another legend, Evil Ed (pictured above, middle, with Micall Parkinsun right) - who produced the track - to great acclaim from an increasingly fervant crowd. The new tracks all stood up next to their older siblings and it appears that Jehst has released yet another classic hip-hop album. The night continued with Rob Swift of the X-Ecutioners scratching it up, followed by Mr Thing and Harry Love battling it out.

Funky Junk!

Last Saturday, Funky Junk returned to Eastbourne in the South East of England to take up monthly residence at The Dew Drop Inn. The night is the brainchild of the awesome 25THC (above) and offers something for everyone, with DJs mixing a diverse collection of music including ska, dub, funk, reggae, hip hop and afrobeat.

Last weekend, Bobby Six (above) was honoured to be the special guest, and set about providing an hour of rock 'n' roll before 25THC ramped it up with a mash-up that featured some sick hip-hop and dubstep while segueing some old school Prodigy, some Hendrix and even the Murder She Wrote theme tune. True story.

For details of upcoming Funky Junks, keep an eye on 25THC's blog.
