DJ Vadim to hit up the hip hop party of the summer

The fine folk at Soundcrash are putting on the hip hop party of the season at London's KOKO on the 18th of August. This event will feature some of the UK’s biggest and baddest acts; cats who have made history on the wheels of steel and who leave audiences slack jawed, sore and wanting more with nothing but  two turntables, a mixer, and a total mastery of that boom bap thang.

DJ Vadim is amongst the heralded few who can count themselves as true innovators and one of the hardest working men in show business. Never predictable, he rips the rule-book to pieces, unleashing a barrage of killer grooves from genres as varied as hip hop, soul, funk, grime, reggae, trip hop and bass music; he never runs out of ideas. Vadim draws upon several lifetimes’ worth of experience: his project is now approaching its twentieth year and has seen him tour across more than sixty countries and perform over two and a half thousand times.

One of the most highly regarded DJs to ever come out of the UK, DJ Format offers bombastic grooves, catchy basslines and body rocking beats. Never one to rest on his laurels, he’ll brandish the hallmarks of his Simonsound audio-visual set  - a collaborative project between DJ Format and Simon James described by DJ Spinna as “a refreshing mesh of the past, present and the future. It's like Mort Garson rocking shell toe Adidas with fat laces blasting into the galaxy in a funky space ship.”

Joining them is fellow heavyweight and the former DMC Champion Mr Thing, who has established himself equally as an absolute virtuoso behind the wheels and as one of most consistent purveyors of infectious grooves in the UK.

Teebs, Nosaj Thing and Eskmo to play live at London's XOYO

You know how we brought you news of that tear-inducingly excellent Gonjasufi gig last month? Well, the dudes at Soundcrash are putting on another awesome show on July 12th. Head along to XOYO to see three first-class beatsmiths live and direct from the USA. After selling out the Village Underground earlier this year, Teebs returns to London. Joining him as co-headliners will be Low End Theory regular Nosaj Thing and Amon Tobin collaborator Eskmo.

Teebs' set on July 12th will no doubt be one to remember. After signing to Flying Lotus’s Brainfeeder label, he released the critically acclaimed Collections 01 plus various collaborations with Daedelus and Prefuse 73 amongst others.

Add to this a rare London show from Nosaj Thing, who returns with his unique blend of psychedelic hip hop. After releasing an incredible body of work himself, Nosaj has remixed Islands by the XX plus the amazing co-production with Kendrick Lamar.

Innovative as ever, Ninja Tune’s Eskmo completes the triple headline line-up, serving up an ever-evolving cross-genre set, featuring live electronics cut to his own live vocals. With a new LP on the way, expect some exclusives as well as classic material.

Needless to say this will be a very special night! For ticket information, head to the Soundcrash website.

Last chance to see Matthew Day's Intermission in Sydney

Acclaimed Melbourne-based choreographer Matthew Day is presenting the final installment of his solo series, TRILOGY to Sydney audiences this week.

Titled Intermission, the new work extends Day’s unique interpretation of choreographic forms. The show, focused around themes of time and body, builds on the minimal nature of the first two works in the series, Thousands (2010) and the sensory tension of Cannibal (2011). The result is a prolific and engaging body of work.

Thousands saw Day being nominated for the Green Room Award 2012 while Cannibal is to be presented by Dancehouse in November this year.

Against a minimal live sound score by James Brown, Day’s Intermission navigates a surrendering of the body to rhythm and momentum. Tension and relief are jointly created via repetitive circular movements and the beautifully hypnotic nature of Day’s dancing.

With his TRILOGY series, Day has established himself as an advocate for exploring and experimenting with new choreographic forms via an intensely physical and emotionally affective platform.
INTERMISSION runs until this Saturday 30 June at PACT Centre for Emerging Artists, 107 Railway Parade, Erskineville, Sydney.

Tickets $20 / $15 concession available through PACT. Get more information here: http://www.pact.net.au/2012/02/intermission-2/

Electric Guest interview

Vinisha Mulani has a chat with Matthew Compton of the bangin’ and soon to be tourin’ Electric Guest:

So here's the history lesson on Electric Guest. The band is made up essentially of two guys, Asa and Matthew. Asa’s brother is Jorma, of Lonely Island (Dick in a Box, anyone?). Jorma is friends with Danger Mouse. Danger Mouse is a magical producer who has worked with the likes of the Black Keys, Beck, Gnarls Barkley and The Shins. He heard them, he liked them, they moved in, they hung out, they recorded.

So tell us a bit about your debut album, Mondo. Having Danger Mouse as a producer must be exciting.
Yeah, I mean it kind of happened a while ago. Before Asa moved to L.A. he was living in Brooklyn, and his brother Jorma is friends with Brian (Danger Mouse's real name). One day his brother played [our music] on the phone, and Brian liked it. We moved to LA, Asa took Brian’s room and Brian had made a studio in the basement, so we started recording there.

We worked for years on the album, we both kinda had our things, and we worked on things together, then we got a bit more serious about it. It wasn’t real until we were mixing the album and Brian said ‘You guys gotta put your band together’.

Tory and Todd Dahlhoff play with us live. Todd’s amazing. He just moved to LA with his brother- we rehearsed for a year before we started playing together.

I read that you cite some of your influences as 60’s era French pop and Indie Rock. Anything you’re listening to right now in particular?
Yeah, it definitely influences my bass. I listen to everything, but I really like Michel Colombier, who is a composer. And there’s another guy, Francois de Roubeaix - he’s one of my favourites. He does mainly films scores, and he actually records by himself, writes the scores himself, he does everything.

So you’re the drummer live, how about when you’re recording?
Yeah, live I do drums. While recording I do a few of the bass parts, a few of the guitar parts, just kind of whatever.

So you’re a bit of a Francois yourself?
(laughs) You could say that. Or trying to be, anyway.

What did you do before Electric Guest?
I’ve been touring for 10 years, or something like that. I played in a band called Cursive for a while. I played in a lot of rock hardcore bands, but I didn’t really enjoy it. I always wanted to play in a band with more like electric bass lines, more like this one.

Do you and Asa write together? How are your styles similar and different?
Yeah, I mean a lot of the ideas we have to make a good song are the same. We worked on Mondo together for years. We come from different places, from different backgrounds. He’s more into hip-hop and I’m more into indie rock but we love that. We both agree on what works about music, and we both like the same things about songs – we both like the same pulse about the song. We agree on what works and we find a common ground between the two styles.

You’ve been touring for a while now – and still have a lot of touring to go, with a lot of fun festivals coming up. Where are you looking forward to going?
I’m the most excited about Australia (the band is playing Splendour in the Grass this year).

Good answer.
No, really! Because I’ve never been. I’ve been talking about it all summer long. I was really hoping to go, I’ve heard really good things about it, and I heard Splendour in the Grass is a great festival.

One of the guys that plays in the band with us has been before, and I’m really looking forward to it. Someone told me that people in Southern California and people from Australia have the same attitude, same way of life.

Finally, what’s a dream collaboration for you? Who would you love to work with one day?
Blonde Redhead. They’re one of my favourite bands.

You can check out Electric Guest's tour dates over at their Facebook page.

Elizabeth Rose interview

Carol Bowditch grabbed a few words with Elizabeth Rose about her current Australian tour:

How are you feeling about your first headline tour?
I'm really excited to be on my first headline tour! With excitement comes also nerves. I get worried about the number of people turning up to the shows, but so far it hasn't been that bad!

What can people who attend your shows expect?
In my live show it's just me up onstage with my keyboard, laptop, sampler and me singing. I try to spice things up a bit with quirky outfits and makeup! The music I play live is slightly varied from the recordings, I like to experiment with new melodies and extended edits of the songs with obscure intros and outros.

You recently joined Chairlift on a national tour. How was that experience?
Touring with Chairlift was so incredible. I've been big fans of them for a couple of years and getting to meet them was just so surreal. Caroline and Patrick are so down to earth and they are so creative in their songwriting. I had a few good chats with Caroline about bands we're into and now I'm working on a remix for them!

Your video created with Ben Wilson is insane! How did you come up with the concept and do you think that video clips are an important tool to compliment your music?
The video clip is trippy, hey? The concept came about when we realised we didn't have the time to shoot a proper clip from scratch. I wanted to use live footage from my single launch at GoodGod [in Sydney] but didn't want it to look like a 'live' show, if that makes sense? And that is where the crazy effects and overlaying of images came in! Video clips are a very important tool to compliment the music, they amplify the meaning/vibe/energy of the song and they are also really another fun tool to use to further express yourself as an artist.

Tell us a little about the collaborations you've been working on...
I've been working with some exciting people lately. A track with Flight Facilities should be coming out in time for summer later this year, and a track I did with UK producer Sinden will be on my EP. I've also been working on a track with a fellow Sydney producer Frames.

What have you been listening to lately? Can we hear any of these musical influences within your music?
Lately I've been getting into the new Simian Mobile Disco album, Unpatterns. Also listening to Patrice Rushen, an 80's soul singer. Her album Straight From the Heart is great!

After the tour, what else have you got planned in 2012?
After the tour I'll be madly preparing for the release of my EP! I'm in the middle of producing it at the moment. After that I have a few festivals coming up, including Mackay Festival of Arts which is a sci-fi dress-up theme! At the end of the year I want to start working on another release, possibly an LP....

Tell us something that it would surprise us to learn about you...
I love to go fishing. Ha! Bet you really didn't see that one coming.

Elizabeth plays at The Standard in Sydney this Friday, 8th June (tickets www.moshtix.com.au) and at Fresh Prince @ Transit Bar in Canberra on Saturday 9th June (tickets on the door).

Sydney Film Festival kicks off today

Sydney Film Festival gets underway today. There are heaps of awesome movies to check out. We've already cast our eyes over a couple of the highlights:

Obviously we're interested in the music doccos that are on offer at this year's Sydney Film Festival. We're especially excited for Marley, and we were fascinated to watch Under African Skies, which sees Paul Simon return to South Africa to reunite with the musicians who collaborated on his mega-hit Graceland.

The album's 1986 release put Simon in the eye of a storm of controversy for breaking the UN cultural boycott of the South African Apartheid regime. Prize-winning filmmaker Joe Berlinger (Metallica: Some Kind of Monster and the Paradise Lost trilogy) follows Simon to South Africa for the album's 25th-anniversary celebrations, where he confronts his critics - including Artists United Against Apartheid founder Dali Tambo - and defends his appropriation of African music. Anyone who has an interest in Simon, in this seminal album, or in the politics of South Africa at the time, will be absolutely fascinated by this interesting and thought-provoking documentary. To be honest, it's worth watching just to see footage of the studio sessions. Awesome.

Coincidentally, yesterday we checked out another film based in South Africa (we were sitting next to Margaret and David in the screening - eeek). Beauty is a study of desire that won of the Queer Palm at Cannes. In it, South African director Oliver Hermanus focuses on Francois (Deon Lotz), a middle-aged, Afrikaans-speaking family man who becomes obsessed with the young son of longtime friends. As Francois stalks the young man, his world begins to unravel. Beauty is a gripping, tough watch. It's difficult to discuss the film's more difficult scenes without giving away plot-spoilers, but suffice to say its challenging, powerful content is typical of the kind of unrelenting cinema that Sydney Film Festival offers up as part of its extensive programme.

Under African Skies is playing Friday 8th June at 6.30pm and Sunday 10th June at 2.30pm at Event Cinemas, George Street, Sydney. Tickets are selling fast. You can see Beauty on Sunday 10th June at 8.30pm and Monday 11th June at 8.15pm at Event Cinemas, George Street, Sydney. Tickets here. Ned Collette interview

Carol Bowditch talks to Melbourne-born, Berlin-based musician Ned Collette about his upcoming album and Australian tour:

Your sound seems to take influence from different genres. Do you have an especially eclectic music taste?
Sure, I guess. I mean I listen to all sorts of stuff from all over the shop really. Different times and places. And though it might seem eclectic it's somehow all tied together in my mind by some indefinable thread. Goodness, or honesty, or risk, or something that makes me feel like the artist/composer is really putting themselves on the line. I guess the one thing I'm not really good at is knowing about new music - stuff that is coming out now. It seems to take at least five years or so for something to filter through to me. I keep realising things I think are new are ten years old already.

In what ways do you think this album differs from the 2009 long-player that Ned Collette + Wirewalker released? Were these differences planned or did they occur organically?
It's a lot more sonically diverse, mostly because it began as stuff I was recording on my own and was then developed with Joe in any direction we felt like taking it, rather than from one session based around the band recording some songs on our usual instruments. So it's not as rock, it's not really as heavily guitar based, though the lyrics and themes have continued in a direction I can't seem to avoid. In that sense it was really organic but the album certainly wasn't planned as a Wirewalker album until quite far into the process.

You created the new album after expatriating to Berlin. Was it an easy relocation? There are some dark themes within the album that suggest that there might have been some difficulties.
It was remarkably easy really. Berlin is a a wonderful city that is very easy to become familiar with. Sure there were difficulties, but no more than usual in a comfortable, first world, white middle-class kinda scenario. I find personal difficulties always get projected on to the background of one's environment though, and I really like writing from that point of view, as if the city or the space around you is somehow an accomplice or at least a witness to your experiences.

You recently toured the UK and Europe. How was it? Any particular favourite gigs/cities?
We haven't toured here properly since 2010, but I've played a fair bit here and there solo since then. It's good. People listen like crazy in Europe - the rooms are silent. They like to let you know exactly what they think afterwards too, which is sometimes interesting, but often gets in the way of the first drink… I played one at the Swiss Cultural Institute in Rome last year which was very beautiful but not
a great crowd - a bunch of Swiss artists and scientists wanting to get off their faces and dance to a horrible Parisian cover band. Other than that, the closing party of a warehouse party institution with the Wirewalker in Freiburg, the regular gigs to a very faithful but also varied crowd I do in a small place here, playing with Kurt Vile last year…

Are you excited about your upcoming tour of Australia?
Yes, very excited. The band played one show of this material when I was back in Melbourne mixing it in October and it was by far the best gig we've ever done. Easily. Even though James and Ben weren't involved in making the record, they understood and fitted their respective things effortlessly into the songs. It was really very enjoyable.

After the tour, what do you have planned for the remainder of 2012?
Well, the album is coming out worldwide in August through Fire Records, so I'll be back here and hopefully busy with that, and with trying to find a way to get the whole band touring a bit more over here again. I'm also going to spend a couple of weeks on a Greek island with a bunch of friends at the end of summer, which has been taking up a fair portion of my consciousness ever since we made that
decision.

Tell us something that we might be surprised to learn about you...
I genuinely think George Michael's 'Faith' is one of the best albums ever made.

This Must Be The Place ticket giveaway!

Okay, so any movie which has David Byrne in it and features a fair amount of Will Oldham on the soundtrack was always gonna appeal to us. Add to that Sean Penn as a perplexingly funny goth rocker and the ever-wonderful Frances McDormand as Penn's wife, and you have yourself quite the film.

The story is thus: Penn plays Cheyenne, a bored, retired, eye-linered, wealthy American former celeb living in Dublin. He's a complex character, bumbling around town with friends and living in an enormous mansion. When he learns of the death of his father - who he has been estranged from for over 30 years - he returns to America to embark on a road trip that will change him forever. His quest is driven by the revelation that his father was humiliated in Auschwitz at the hands of an SS officer, who may still be alive and living in America. Cheyenne's search takes him across the heartland of a country now foreign to him, encountering some great people as he is reawakened to the possibility of reconciliation and self-discovery.

At first, Penn's character is hard to get a handle on, but soon, his bumbling confusion combined with some cracking one-liners make him genuinely appealing and his journey across The States is intriguing and shot beautifully. This really is a stunning film to look at - an absolute feast for the eyes. While some of the sub-plots serve to confuse, This Must Be The Place is entertaining and at times touching, sad and laugh-out-loud funny.

The good news for you (if you live in Australia) is that Bobbysix.com has teamed up with our mates at Hopscotch Films and have a couple of double passes to give away. All you have to do is send your name and address to info@bobbysix.com with the subject "This must be the place to score a double pass" by April 4th and we'll select the winners at random. The pass is valid at selected cinemas in Sydney, Perth, Brisvegas, Radelaide and Melbs and the film is rated M.

Midnight in Paris ticket giveaway!

Here at Bobbysix.com, we've teamed up with our good friends from Hopscotch films in Sydney to give you the chance to see the brand new Woody Allen film for FREE!

The romantic comedy is about a family travelling to the French capital for business. The party includes a young engaged couple forced to confront the illusion that a life different from their own is better. Yeah, okay, we totes just copy and pasted that off IMDB. Well, we haven't seen it yet. What do you people expect from us?

What we do know is that it stars Owen Wilson, who we love so much for his performance as Dignan in Bottle Rocket that we can even forgive him for Drillbit Taylor. And, also, that our fave reviewer, Mark Kermode - who has been quite critical of Woody Allen of late - really enjoyed it. Being fans of Mr Allen (Annie Hall is never off the DVD player at Bobbysix Towers) we're super excited to head along to check this new offering out.

If you want the chance to WIN one of THREE DOUBLE PASSES to this film, then all you have to do is either LIKE BOBBYSIX.COM'S FACEBOOK PAGE, FOLLOW BOBBYSIX ON TWITTER or, if you are already a follower, then simply SHOOT AN EMAIL to info@bobbysix.com titled "Hells yeah, I want some Woody." We'll put everyone's name in a hat and draw out the three lucky winners on Wednesday.

The double passes are valid for screenings from October 20 for the duration of the film's run. Oh, and while we love our chums from around the globe, this giveaway is open to Australia-based readers only. Sorry.

St Jerome's Laneway Festival announces its 2012 line-up

At Bobbysix.com, we've been fans of Laneway since the early days. We were there in 2007, watching The Temper Trap belting out anthemic tunes at Sydney's Circular Quay before most people knew who the hell they were. We saw Daniel Johnston's heartbreaking performance, Mumford & Sons' triumphant display and Florence + The Machine's lung-busting turn in 2010.

So we're excited to bring you the line-up for the 2012 event, which, once again will take place in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth, Auckland and Singapore. Highlights of next year's event include the wonderful Laura Marling (above), Feist, The Horrors, Portugal The Man and Yuck.

So, without further ado, here's who you can see at next year's Laneway: ACTIVE CHILD, ANNA CALVI, AUSTRA, BULLION, CHAIRLIFT, CULTS, DZ DEATHRAYS, EMA, FEIST [except Adelaide], GEOFFREY O'CONNOR, GIRLS, GIVERS [Syd + Melb], GLASSER, HUSKY [Bris, Syd, Melb], JOHN TALABOT, JONTI, LAURA MARLING, M83, ONEMAN, PAJAMA CLUB (feat. Sharon and Neil Finn), PORTUGAL THE MAN [Syd + Melb], SBTRKT (Live), TRIPLE J Unearthed Winners, THE VERY WEST, THE DRUMS, THE HORRORS, THE PAINS OF BEING PURE AT HEART, THE PANICS, TORO Y MOI, TOTAL CONTROL, TWIN SHADOW, WASHED OUT, WU LYF, YUCK

Tickets go on sale Wednesday October 19th at 9am (EDST) through Greentix. We said it last year and we'll say it again, if you want to go, you'll need to be on the ball when tickets are made available. If you snooze, you lose.

You can keep up to date with all things Laneway on Facebook and Twitter.

Super cheap Great Escape early bird delegate tickets now available

Last year's Great Escape Festival in Brighton was wicked. If you fancy heading along again next year, but feel like getting an even more rounded experience (as well as being able to avoid those pesky queues), then you might be interested in the fact that they have just released delegate passes for TGE 2012, which will take place in and around many different venues around Brighton city centre from 10-12 May.

As well as giving priority access to all the venues, a delegate pass also gets you into The Great Escape convention, which will bring together music business professionals from across the world to discuss, evaluate and share the new approaches that are emerging for developing, launching and monetising artist and music rights. The festival will once again introduce the best line up of up and coming bands to the 15,000 international delegates and new music fans that attend. Super Early Bird passes are now available to buy for a frankly embarrassingly cheap price of £80. There are a limited number of passes available to buy at this discounted rate so ensure that you buy fast to avoid disappointment. Passes can now be purchased by CLICKING HERE.

Oh, and if you are a band that fancies playing at Brighton's own version of SXSW, then click here for deets. We will, of course, be in attendance, so maybe we'll see you there.
