Academy Award Nominations

Ah yes, the ill-advised dresses, the massive egos, the fake sincerity, the hours of boredom before we reach the part of the show that anyone cares about... we love The Oscars at BobbySix.com. So we were obviously excited when this year's nominations landed this week. Pleasingly enough, it's actually a pretty strong field this time round and some of the categories are tough to confidently call.

Here is a list of the big six's nominations along with BobbySix.com's bold predictions as to who will walk away with the gold statues when the ceremony takes place in March. If only Ricky Gervais was hosting...

BEST PICTURE
127 HOURS
BLACK SWAN
INCEPTION
THE FIGHTER
THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT
THE KING’S SPEECH
THE SOCIAL NETWORK
TOY STORY 3
TRUE GRIT
WINTER’S BONE

Our hearts tell us that Toy Story 3 should win. Our heads tell us that it is hard to look far beyond Inception. If we were betting folk though, we'd have a sneaky few quid on The Social Network.

BEST DIRECTOR
DARREN ARONOFSKY - BLACK SWAN
DAVID FINCHER - THE SOCIAL NETWORK
TOM HOOPER - THE KING’S SPEECH
JOEL AND ETHAN COEN - TRUE GRIT
DAVID O. RUSSELL - THE FIGHTER

We're going all out on Fincher. Mark our words.

BEST ACTOR
JEFF BRIDGES - TRUE GRIT
JAVIER BARDEM - BIUTIFUL
JESSE EISENBERG - THE SOCIAL NETWORK
COLIN FIRTH - THE KING’S SPEECH
JAMES FRANCO - 127 HOURS

Sometimes The Oscars throw up dead certs. Colin Firth will win Best Actor. No doubt.

BEST ACTRESS
ANNETTE BENING - THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT
NICOLE KIDMAN - RABBIT HOLE
JENNIFER LAWRENCE - WINTER’S BONE
NATALIE PORTMAN - BLACK SWAN
MICHELLE WILLIAMS - BLUE VALENTINE

It would be totally amazing - and fully deserved - if Jennifer Lawrence won this. However, she is probably too young to get the nod as the Academy will see her as someone with potential that they can reward at a later date. Shame, because her performance was magnificent in Winter's Bone. Therefore, Natalie Portman will probably walk away with it. Which we're happy enough about as well.

BEST ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE
CHRISTIAN BALE - THE FIGHTER
JOHN HAWKES - WINTER’S BONE
JEREMY RENNER - THE TOWN
MARK RUFFALO - THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT
GEOFFREY RUSH - THE KING’S SPEECH

Pretty much everything Geoffrey Rush does is close to perfection, so there is a good chance that it will be a Best Actor/Best Supporting Actor double for The King's Speech. However, Mark Ruffalo's performance in The Kids Are Alright does it for us. A good film and a fine turn as a man coming to terms - in his own inimitable way - with the fact that he is father of a couple of teens.

BEST ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE
AMY ADAMS - THE FIGHTER
HELENA BONHAM CARTER - THE KING’S SPEECH
MELISSA LEO - THE FIGHTER
HAILEE STEINFELD - TRUE GRIT
JACKIE WEAVER - ANIMAL KINGDOM

This one is the toughest to call of all, so take your pick. Is it lazy to just suggest that another award is heading to The King's Speech? Maybe, but we're gonna do it anyway.

Predictions by Rob Townsend. Agree? Disagree? Let us know below.

The best thing about this is that, if we're right, we will brag about it until the cows come home. If we're wrong, you'll have long-since forgotten about our predictions by the time the ceremony comes around. WE WIN!

What it should be (based on films I've seen):

Picture - Black Swan
Director - Aronofsky
Actor - Eisenberg
Actress - Portman
Supp. Actor - Hawkes
Supp. Actress - Steinfeld

What it will be:

Picture - The Social Network
Director - Fincher
Actor - Firth
Actress - Portman
Supp. Actor - Bale
Supp. Actress - Steinfeld

All fairly deserving whichever way it ends up. Nothing particularly offensive about any of the Oscar noms this year and particularly good to see such mainstream recognition for Winter's Bone even if it is massively over rated (but very good).

Some non nominated films it would have been nice to have seen some recognition for:

That Evening Sun - Film, Actor (Hal Holbrook), Supporting Actor (Ray McKinnon).

Big Fan - Actor (Patton Oswalt).

The Killer Inside Me - Director (Michael Winterbottom), Actor (Casey Affleck).

I haven't seen any of the non-nominated films you mention. But I will certainly give them a look, on your recommendation.
