Session Victim - Dark Sienna

Ripping apart the one's and two's, Session Victim don't care about the boundaries of house music, taking it from disco to soul to hip-hop and back, with the aim of stamping love on every groove and leaving a smile on everyone’s faces.

Tom Loud's Hot Dub Time Machine

When we last saw Tom Loud play in Sydney, we had the best time ever, so we're pretty excited that, for one night only, he is bringing his late night festival interactive dance show back to the city. Using the top-secret carbon neutral energy source, "Hot Dub,” the show will time-travel back to 1954 where, powered by boogie, the party will journey through music history, back to 2012!

At the cutting edge of audio/visual mixing, Tom Loud steers the party through time using turntables and laptops with vision projected onto massive screens. It's a guided journey through 60 years of pop culture – awesome music, with live video mash-ups, turntablism, dancing and booty shaking for everyone. Joining Tom is Lulu Loud, cabin attendant and Time Lord, who appears on screen to introduce each decade, and demonstrate the special “power up” dance moves. Accompanying the music are awesome clips of movies, TV and concerts from the time. So bring your dancing shoes and get ready for some awesome time travelling.

Nice & Ego's Hottest 100 mix

Here at Bobbysix.com, we occasionally mention Triple J and their Hottest 100. Now, our non-Australian readers probably wonder what the hell we are talking about. Well, to explain, Triple J is a radio station in Aus and, every Australia Day, they count down the most popular 100 singles as voted for by the public. The Hottest 100. It's a pretty big deal.

Indeed, Bobbysix's Deputy Editor Heidi has been known to take days sweating over her Hottest 100 votes, panicking about whether she should vote for her personal favourite on the album, or the most popular single, propelling a worthy artist to a higher rank? Is that selling out? What about that little-known band who she loves but that will never make it in, is that wasting her vote? And if she does that, will Art vs Science achieve a better result than they would have if she’d voted for, say, The Grates instead?) etc, etc, until oblivion. You get the picture.

Well, anyway, Melbourne DJs Nice and Ego recently compiled this little clip which mashes together all (yes all) 100 songs from this year's poll in an audio visual megamix. It's kinda like a microcosmic version of Australia Day. Only without the beers, the barbeque and the day off work. Still, you get the idea.

Fred Falke at The Nest, Dalston

Jonjon checks out the ESM Launch Party, featuring Fred Falke, Starsmith and Burns at The Nest, Dalston, 17/11/11.

Dalston gets a lot of stick... and deservedly so. It’s a punchline to any attempt at social commentary on “youth” and “fashion”. However “The Nest” doesn’t really fit in... it’s a bit too commercial, a bit too slick. It’s missing the dank, a mysterious musk and sticky floors. How can I put this nicely? It isn’t cool. How do I know? It let me in without having to queue. Admittedly the place *was* near empty but still, that isn’t right.

When I say empty I’m not being completely accurate. It’s not often you walk into a small club on a chilly Thursday evening and see the crowd near the dj booth already packed five or six rows deep. Admittedly the space near the dj booth is cramped but at similar gigs I’ve attended you were able to get close all night... what is going on? The crowd... how to explain the crowd... how many people attend a sweaty club gig wearing chinos, brown leather shoes and striped collared shirts? Not me, but this crowd did – when did it become cool to be preppy in a club? Not faux preppy, I mean true, Animal House preppy. They even had US accents. Does Smirnoff Black wash more easily out of an oxford shirt? Was I the one out of place?

There wasn’t much dancing happening on arrival. The crowd, what there was of one, was massed near the dj booth and the dj (who according to the set times list was Burns) was playing an excellent set of French house/Italo disco, but the dancing was minimal. This changed quickly however... Burns (or whoever he was – I take care in my reviews) stepped back and the music was turned down a tad. That was when the chant started; “Golden CAGE! Golden CAGE! GOLDEN CAGE!”. These guys (and the crowd was overwhelmingly guys) were here for one reason alone: Fred Falke.

You should know who Fred Falke is (go buy Rubicon or Music for my Friends!). First garnering notice with Alan Braxe, he’s released some excellent, and some terrible, remixes. Tonight we were lucky. On arrival I’d been worried by seeing his set was only for one hour, but I shouldn’t. He opened with his recent remix of Metronomy’s The Look and played his greatest hits – remixes of Robyn’s Dancing On My Own, tracks from Rubicon and snippets of Daft Punk and finishing with his ever popular remix of Whitest Boy Alive’s Golden Cage, sending the collared shirt crowd into an ironically ecstasy-lacking ecstasy. Not only was his set excellent, but he also played the bass to his tracks live. Short, but amazing.

I felt a tad sorry for Starsmith. He’s talented and could have headlined on his own but the crowd had seen what they wanted to see and began to dissipate. I can only hope the money I presume he’s raking in from his high-profile collaborations and remixes is enough to sustain him.

ESM is next scheduled for January with Burns as the only act confirmed. Go if you get the chance. Burns is an excellent dj, the crowd can only get better (first nights and all) and the cost was minimal for the talent involved (£3? Bargain). If you usually avoid the East End don’t let that put you off, and if you’re a local take advantage of the talent appearing in your backyard.

Bobbysix.com DJs rock the Cameras album launch party

Last Friday, Sydney's magnificent Cameras launched their album at The Standard. The night was fantastic, with the band playing a typically awesome set to a packed room. Displaying layered soundscapes, the juxtaposing vocals of Eleanor Dunlop and Fraser Harvey and intelligently-structured songs, this is a group which continues to grow with every performance. And, considering they were already pretty bloody good when they first started three years ago, that's a scary thought. Meanwhile, support act Winter People put in a turn that suggests they are also one of the bands to watch in 2012. 

At Bobbysix.com, we were delighted to be invited to the launch, not just as long-term fans of Cameras (we've been supporting them since the very beginning, y'all) but as house DJs for the night. So, between bands, Heidi (pictured, above) and Bobby kept the punters entertained with our sick skills on the ones and twos. Once we were done, we simply breathed in the brilliance of the night's headliners (below).

Funky Junk!

Last Saturday, Funky Junk returned to Eastbourne in the South East of England to take up monthly residence at The Dew Drop Inn. The night is the brainchild of the awesome 25THC (above) and offers something for everyone, with DJs mixing a diverse collection of music including ska, dub, funk, reggae, hip hop and afrobeat.

Last weekend, Bobby Six (above) was honoured to be the special guest, and set about providing an hour of rock 'n' roll before 25THC ramped it up with a mash-up that featured some sick hip-hop and dubstep while segueing some old school Prodigy, some Hendrix and even the Murder She Wrote theme tune. True story.

Bobby Six's English DJing debut - this Saturday!

Having spun tunes in many of Sydney's coolest venues, Bobby Six will be making an excited English debut behind the wheels of steel this weekend, playing some old school rock 'n' roll at Eastbourne's Dew Drop on Saturday. Providing some ska, dub, funk, reggae, hip hop, afrobeat and dubstep are Rocspin and the legend that is 25THC.
