SPIN Magazine gives away free Newermind download

Three things we like at Bobbysix.com:

1. Introducing people to new music. We love it when someone comes up to us and says something like "I read about Bridezilla at Bobbysix.com and they are my new favourite band."
2. Introducing people to old music. We equally love it when we influence people to listen to, say, Tom Waits' Blue Valentine from 1978.

So, imagine our joy when we discovered the opportunity to combine all three, by pointing you in the direction of SPIN's free download of their Nirvana tribute, Newermind. The album has the same tracklisting as the seminal 1991 grunge classic, but all songs are re-imagined by a mix of new artists and Nirvana's peers. On this eclectic record, you'll find Meat Puppets and The Vaselines, you'll hear Midnight Juggernauts taking things in a dance direction, Bobbysix favourite Jessica Lea Mayfield offering some country and Charles Bradley & The Menahan Street Band bringing some garage soul to the table. Perhaps the main thing this brilliant collection does is highlight the sheer quality of Nirvana's songwriting. Two decades on, these songs still sound fresh and thrilling. Compare them to the shit that clogs up today's charts and try not to weep.

Frankly, it's a free album download!

You'll have noticed a lack of reviews and interviews this week at Bobbysix.com. We've been busy as mofo's up in here. There's loads of that kinda thing heading your way soon though. Free I Oh You mixtape!

Here at BobbySix.com, we like to bring you heaps of new music and the occasional free download. Today though, we have outdone ourselves. We're not just pointing you in the direction of one free song, but rather an entire album of amazingness.

So, thanks to our friends at I Oh You, we bring you Coming Up, Not Down, a free compilation of songs by some of the most promising up-and-coming musical talents conceived within the borders of Australia. This collection of impressive tracks is available via the I Oh You website  for the next month or so. So get downloading right away.

Free Grand Atlantic download

Brisbane quartet Grand Atlantic have recorded their third record, entitled Constellations, at the Seacliff Lunatic Asylum - an abandoned psychiatric hospital near Dunedin, New Zealand. Excitingly, they have made the first single to be lifted from this long-player available as a free download.

Poison To the Vine represents a refinement of the band's sound and bridges the pop sensibilities of the previous album with the more intense mood of the new record. Get amongst its rolling riffs, chiming 12-string licks and massive rhythm by downloading it here.

The Preachers launch The 66 Project

Sydney's The Preachers are fast becoming one of BobbySix.com's favourite up-and-coming bands. After almost a year together, an EP and some tentative interest from labels that weren't quite their cup of tea, they've decided to spend the next six months recording and releasing demos.

It's entitled The 66 Project and, like all good ideas, it's a pretty straightforward one. They plan to record and release as many high-quality demos (at least one a month) over the next six months, make everything free, and document the process.

The 66 Project officially begins in December but, in the meantime, the ever-generous bunch are kicking off by giving away their rather fine debut EP for free. They’re also releasing two offcuts from the EP, Young and Fictional Lover as free downloads.

Considering this is a band that are all about the songs rather than sticking to a genre or capturing a specific sound, their upcoming demo releases are sure to be pretty diverse, from acoustic folk and dark country to full-blown dirty-as-hell rock 'n' roll. So keep an eye on their 66 Project blog. After all, you can't ask for more than constant flow of high-quality, free music over the next few months.

Gotye returns with new single

A few years back, songwriter, producer and all-round one-man band Gotye, otherwise known as Wally De Backer, came up with an album that really struck a chord. His beautifully crafted Like Drawing Blood was highly placed in BobbySix.com's 2006 end of year top ten, was voted Triple J listeners' favourite album of 2006 and iTunes UK's Album Of The Year in 2008. In 2007, he won the ARIA Award as Australia's Best Male Artist.

It seems like forever since Like Drawing Blood was released so - considering it was on constant rotation at Bobby Six Towers for a long time - it is to some excitement that news arrives of a forthcoming release. Yes, in early 2011 there will finally be a new Gotye long-player and, to whet our appetites, single Eyes Wide Open is available for a limited time as a free download from his website.

Written, performed, recorded and produced by the multi-talented multi-tasker, this single combines pedal steel guitar, cello moans, bass tones sampled from the Winton Musical Fence in outback Queensland and sounds created in the home studio built by his father. The result proves that, while remaining boundary-pushing and inventive, Gotye sure as hell knows how to pen a catchy tune.

Quiet Lights give away three-track demo

While they are holed-up in the studio piecing together their album, Quiet Lights (ex Gods & Queens, Argentine) are offering up something to whet your appetite. Purveyors of a rather splendid ethereal dream-pop/shoegazey sound, the Brooklyn band are allowing fans to download a three-track demo for free, and you can't ask for a better bargain than that. Click here to download the songs.
