Brighton Fashion Week - War Child Charity Gig

In the decadent and opulent world of fashion, the chance to give something back is always met with enthusiasm, creativity and of course, style. Brighton Fashion Week is no exception. The event? A night of '50s rock 'n' roll fun crossed with an eclectic bunch of seriously great bands in aid of War Child, a dedicated charity that protects children living in war zones throughout the world.

The mood at the Concorde 2 was relaxed and ethereal as Brighton's most beautiful enjoyed a great night for a great cause, traipsing between the juxtaposed lively, energetic rockabilly room and the grungy main room.

The crowd lapped up the theatrics of South London party boys, La Shark. Decked out in face paint and a fine pair of red leather pants, frontman Samuel Geronimo Deschamps commanded attention as he stormed the floor, mounted the scaffolding and hung upside down, all the while screaming lyrics over the band's unique brand of synth-pop.

In between acts, revellers jumped and jived in style to classic '50s tunes courtesy of the Brighton Rumble Rockabilly Club and, of course, it wouldn't have been a Fashion Week event without a fashion show. While the dapper attendees certainly delivered, a show featuring edgy and inspired designers was thrown in for good measure, much to the delight of the room.

The brilliant climax of the night was definitely the mysteriously sexy headliners, Dark Horses, lead by sultry Swede, Lisa Elle. Fresh from touring with Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and Kasabian, they delivered a powerful, raw and inspired performance. For the previous acts, the crowd was convivial but there was something sobering and soulful about Elle's powerful voice that drew near silence and reflection from the audience. A truly beautiful way for the night to end.

Brighton Fashion Week VIP Launch Party

To be honest, you'll find Bobbysix.com at the opening of an envelope, so when we were invited to spend an evening in the company of Brighton's most beautiful and fashionable, we jumped at the chance. With a cocktail in one hand and a camera in the other, we hung out with models, designers, photographers and stylists at the Brighton Hilton for the Brighton Fashion Week VIP Launch party.

The night officially kicked-off the annual proceedings which run for the whole of this week. We'll be covering the entire damn shooting match, including tonight's War Child charity gig, tomorrow's Brighton Frocks show, Friday's Couture Catwalk show and all the other exciting stuff that they've got goin' on. See keep your eyes on Bobbysix.com for regular updates, photos, reviews and wotnot. Here's the attractive-as-hell evidence of last night's amazingness:

Brighton Fashion Weekend

As a guest of the lovely folk at Brighton Frocks, I recently spent some time amongst the sartorially elegant and the beautiful at Brighton's Fashion Weekend. The annual event ran over three days and included a fashion emporium, special film screenings, open studios, widespread fashion installations and all manner of workshops around the city. The main event was a theatrical catwalk show at the Metropole Hilton on Friday night, featuring collections from Brighton's finest. I arrived in time for the dress-rehearsal (below).

Backstage before the show, things were exactly as you would imagine: an absolute frenzy of chaotic activity. It was a real buzz, as event organisers ran around barking one order into a mobile while simultaneously receiving another on their walkie-talkie. Meanwhile, photographers snapped away as models in varying states of undress queued impatiently around make-up tables. There was none of the cattiness that one might expect from such an event. All the - entirely amateur and voluntary - models were friendly and visibly nervous. While, front of house, punters jostled for seats or lorded it up in the VIP section, nails were being bitten backstage.

The next day, there was a lower-key show on a small runway in the same room as a fashion emporium. The scaled-down nature of this one (just a couple of collections and far fewer models) meant things were positively serene compared to the previous night. Before the show, models (who dwarfed all the normal-sized humans in the room) posed for photos and waited for things to get under way.

Despite the success of the previous night's show, there was no complacency amongst the models, some of whom found a quiet spot backstage for one last practice.

The insanely talented Emma (below, left) from Owl And The Grapes was the official reviewer of the weekend, so you can read a much more insightful and entertaining account of all the fun and games here.
