Dear Pluto's Grand Opening night - Photos.

The kids who brought you the Hibernian House Vintage and Retro sales launched a brand new space recently. Tucked away in Sydney's Surry Hills, Dear Pluto presents similarly awesome sales - only now they are EVERY WEEKEND rather than monthly - while also offering up other amazing events such as movie nights, markets, swap parties and album launches. BobbySix.com was on hand to take some snaps of those cool enough to have found their way to the grand opening.

You can, and should, join Dear Pluto's facebook page.

Friends of Mine

You may have noticed a little widget down the bottom of the right hand side of the page. If not, check it out as it links you to some of my dear friends' blogs that I think are really rather good. Amongst the wry wit of Portsmouth's own Rhys Jones and the freelance writings of Guy Wilkinson and Colin (once, twice, three times) Delaney, you'll find blogs from Sydney's two finest photographers, Cybele Malinowski and Daniel Boud (above).

There are some owls and some pipsqueaks, and, amongst others, a newish fashion related offering from Sydney-based model Olivia Dunn Frost (below) and her sister Emerald. (If you would like your blog added to the blogroll, then drop me a line).

As for this blog, I'm looking to add to the music-related gubbins by branching out a little further, so keep your eyes open for interviews with people from the world of film, TV, fashion and many other creative areas.

Go here, click on the Best Fashion Blog category and vote for Owl and the Grapes! Voting is open 'till 20th December. Thanks!

Brighton Fashion Weekend

As a guest of the lovely folk at Brighton Frocks, I recently spent some time amongst the sartorially elegant and the beautiful at Brighton's Fashion Weekend. The annual event ran over three days and included a fashion emporium, special film screenings, open studios, widespread fashion installations and all manner of workshops around the city. The main event was a theatrical catwalk show at the Metropole Hilton on Friday night, featuring collections from Brighton's finest. I arrived in time for the dress-rehearsal (below).

Backstage before the show, things were exactly as you would imagine: an absolute frenzy of chaotic activity. It was a real buzz, as event organisers ran around barking one order into a mobile while simultaneously receiving another on their walkie-talkie. Meanwhile, photographers snapped away as models in varying states of undress queued impatiently around make-up tables. There was none of the cattiness that one might expect from such an event. All the - entirely amateur and voluntary - models were friendly and visibly nervous. While, front of house, punters jostled for seats or lorded it up in the VIP section, nails were being bitten backstage.

The next day, there was a lower-key show on a small runway in the same room as a fashion emporium. The scaled-down nature of this one (just a couple of collections and far fewer models) meant things were positively serene compared to the previous night. Before the show, models (who dwarfed all the normal-sized humans in the room) posed for photos and waited for things to get under way.

Despite the success of the previous night's show, there was no complacency amongst the models, some of whom found a quiet spot backstage for one last practice.

The insanely talented Emma (below, left) from Owl And The Grapes was the official reviewer of the weekend, so you can read a much more insightful and entertaining account of all the fun and games here.

Passion, noise and excitement?

Every Saturday i have my own column in English newspaper, The Argus. here is today's:
I gave my Australian girlfriend her first taste of English football last week. Being an integral part of the super trendy Sydney fashion scene, she is far more interested in high-waisted trousers and vintage dresses than watching 22 men with Toni & Guy haircuts chase a piece of leather around some grass, but, knowing what a big part of my life football is, she was happy to come and see what gets me so happy/angry/frustrated/depressed on a Saturday. Bearing in mind the only other sporting occasion she has ever attended was an Aussie Rules game played at Melbourne’s world-famous MCG in front of about 90,000 fervent fans, I had to try to choose a match that would equal that occasion for atmosphere and thrills. So, with that in mind, the most obvious thing to do would have been to take her to England’s important World Cup qualifier at Wembley on Wednesday night. I didn’t do that though. Oh no. I decided to give her her first sample of English football in a place that is perhaps least representative of its passion, noise and excitement. That’s right, we went to Withdean to watch a goalless draw between Brighton & Hove Albion and Tranmere Rovers.

We sat in the north stand and I did my best to explain what was happening on the pitch (“The Brighton player is kicking the ball to another Brighton player… oh, he’s kicked it straight at the Tranmere player.”). She seemed to take it all in, although, as Brighton's Dean Cox almost scored a cracking volley, I noticed her absently reading the list of ingredients on the back of her drink bottle. Later, as Tranmere fired in a corner, she was instead focusing on pulling a loose thread from her jumper. I’m sure we can all sympathise with the fact that her attention wandered at regular intervals and, for the most part, she actually rather enjoyed the game, even though she didn‘t get to see any goals. While she may not have sampled English football in its most indicative environment (like at a ground where the stands aren‘t a million miles from the pitch), she did at least get the full Withdean experience in just one afternoon. She got to see how the warmth of the sun can create a typically lethargic atmosphere, and how the inevitable rain causes everyone to reach for their ponchos. She saw fairly poor football punctuated by some decent moments, heard an equal amount of wit, moaning and expletives from fans, and got to join in with the occasional chant of ‘Albion’. Oh, and at least Brighton didn’t lose. I suppose, actually, in that respect, it wasn’t quite the full Withdean experience after all.

Vintage and Retro Fashion at Hibernian House

As the, ahem, "King Of Sydney" (according to this man), I feel it is my place to pass on some of my undeniable coolness. So, if you are in need of some cool new threads, you might want to check the fuck out of the monthly Vintage and Retro Fashion sale that I help to host.

Okay, so the coolness is mostly thanks to this chick, and my roll in the procedings is to put my ridiculously anal (pffft) organisational skills to use. Basically I'm in charge of making sure we don't run out of carrier bags. Hey, it's an important job. So, come along to see us and you're bound to find something. There's lots of girls stuff and a few boys things too (I'm selling some of my stuff because I have grown fond of wearing blouses recently).

Full details here, or if you are a facebooker, then go here.
