The Holidays party in the 'burbs

Sydney's indie popsters The Holidays are set to rock Melbourne's 'burbs at the Red Bull Bedroom Jam’s second round finale event, The Backyard Jam, on Saturday 13th August in Eltham, Victoria.

As we told you a little while back, the Red Bull Bedroom Jam is on a mission to unearth explosive teenage talent that, thus far, has been confined to poster-clad bedrooms across Australia. The Backyard Jam final on the 13th will see four finalists perform a live gig alongside The Holidays. Melbourne-based band Brad & The Pussycats, independent musician Leek & The War Wick Tragedy, pop rock artist Matt Casey and pop punk band CruelToBeKind will battle it out at the Backyard Jam event.

The lucky winner will receive a 5-day all-expenses-paid trip to LA to record in a state-of-the-art recording studio, followed by a national tour of Aus as the support act for an Australian band.

The four finalists have already topped Red Bull Bedroom Jam’s online Buzz Chart with their live webcast performances. Now each band will have to wow the judging panel of music industry bigwigs at the finale taking place in Brad & The Pussycats backyard, as voted by fans on the Backyard Jam Buzz Chart.

Round One winners, four-piece rock band Welcome Wednesday wowed judges in Alice Springs in May, winning a trip to London where they jammed at a London recording studio and performed the gig of a lifetime at grubby rock fest, Download.

Guinness launch Live Thursdays

With Arthur’s Day around the corner, Guinness last night launched an eight-week nationwide campaign, entitled Guinness Live Thursdays, to celebrate craftsmanship in music and with the aim of finding Australia’s next up-and-coming band.

It's a competition totally worth entering too, as the winning band will score an all-expenses-paid trip to Dublin to perform alongside some top live acts - and Stereophonics - at the Arthur’s Day celebrations on Thursday 22nd September. Arthur’s Day, incidentally, honours the date in 1759 that good old Arthur Guinness signed the lease on the St. James’ Gate Brewery and introduced the black stuff to the world

Anyway, after playing an intimate live acoustic performance at yesterday's launch, ambassador for Guinness Live Thursdays and APRA award winning blues and roots artist, Ash Grunwald, told us, "I am so excited to be part of something that helps untapped quality talent get noticed by the Australian music industry. We have a lot to offer here."

WANNA GET YOUR BAND INVOLVED?
From today, aspiring bands from Australia can upload their MP3 tracks on the Guinness Australia Facebook page to enter the competition. The entries will be shortlisted to 30 bands who will play in 15 regional judged heats across Australia. The four finalists will then progress to the Guinness Live Thursdays National Final, due to be held in Sydney on 15th September. The lucky winners will then whizz around the globe to take part in the third annual Arthur’s Day global celebration - alongside the Scissor Sisters, Stereophonics, Paloma Faith and Calvin Harris and more - on Thursday 22nd September, in Dublin.

So get uploading today - and you could find yourself on stage on the other side of the planet in a few weeks!

Having spent most of 2011 writing and recording, Australia's Millions have taken a confident stride towards the big time by winning radio station triple j's nationwide battle of the bands -  The Unearthed 2011 Competition. This triumph means they will get to open this year's Splendour In The Grass Festival on the main stage, alongside sets from Kanye West, The Hives, Jane's Addiction and The Mars Volta.

Their debut EP is due out in late 2011 but, for now, you can sample some of their swaggering rock 'n' roll awesomeness by helping yourself to the free download below.

We've just launched our new facebook fan page and we're pretty excited. However, something is missing from it. And that something is your face. That's right, we want the world to know how spectacularly beautiful the people are who read our words are. Then we can, like, form some kind of super hot army and take over the world through the power of liking quite good music. Or something.

On Thursday evening 21st October, Smirnoff is hosting a Send-Off party in Sydney for Australia's nightlife, where they'll be showcasing what Australians have nominated as being the best of the country's local nightlife and announcing the country Australia will be exchanging with for the big global event on November 27.

Vote for Oliver Heath's Band Of Skulls video clip

Sydney resident and sometime moustache wearer, Oliver Heath, is a film-maker. His works have exhibited all over the place, from commercial galleries to bohemian urban dives.

His latest piece is entered in a competition to become the official video for the Band of Skulls single, Fire. "It's great doing clips for this competition because you can make a video without having to go to the band/label/management committee," Oliver explains from his warehouse studio. "It gets judged when it's done and you get to compare it to other people's. Friendly competition. It's great to see other videos from all over the world."

About the clip, in which a monochrome world takes a psychedelic turn, Oliver says, "Because of zero budget considerations, I have a standby mental list of locations and friends that I like to incorporate into a video project. So in this case I was listening to the song, and my friends at the Carnival of Electric Illusions instantly popped to mind - totally Fires of the Night. The've got a great take on Bowie's neo-romanticism. They live it full-time, and put on these crazy down-the-rabbit-hole parties. I'd wanted a chance to show the magical effect they have on me, and this was it. The story is literally about the slap-you-in-the-face creativity of night creatures dragging you - kicking and screaming - from the perils of the monochrome world."

When it comes to inspiration for the film clip, Oliver took from a number of eclectic sources. "I shot the black and white stuff in tribute to elements of Jarmuch and Hitchcock, the colour stuff was inspired by the creature of the night sequence in The Rocky Horror Picture Show," he explains. "The lens filter prisms were from the 70's and a camera fair find, rotated by hand during the shoot, no less."

"I try and keep the clip on theme but not too literal so that it's a mood piece, adding to the enjoyment of the music without stealing the limelight. People should still have space to think about what the song is about, but you don't want to make a meaningless collage of video. It's a balance. I think we got it right this time."
