The Jezabels at The Hordern Pavilion, Sydney

When Bobbysix.com first chanced upon The Jezabels a few years ago, in tiny Sydney venues supporting The Wahas and Bridezilla, we always thought they were pretty good. We never dreamed though that, in 2012, they would be headlining the mammoth Hordern Pavilion. In fairness, neither did they.

If, during their seminal hometown gig, the band seemed a little distant, it wasn't down to a rock n roll persona or through being aloof but rather because they were completely overwhelmed by their surroundings. "This point in the set is when we are supposed to say something," singer Hayley Mary told the crowd. "But we're too fucking nervous."

Her nerves were unnecessary. She is a natural born frontwoman. With a vocal that is incredibly powerful and that transcends into Kate Bush territory on occasions, she is the focus of the entire crowd's attention and the rest of the band kinda fade into the background in comparison to her sparkling presence (remember the term Sleeperblokes?). That's not to take anything away from their compositions. These guys know how to craft a song that retains indie credentials while being fit for plenty of radio exposure. Set opener Endless Summer is a fine example of this, with its prominent guitar and massive vocal burst on the chorus.

Obviously, with the band not used to performing in such huge surroundings, they found it a little hard to command the entire, cavernous room, but they certainly connected with the keenest fans at the front of the venue, who blared back lyrics and clapped along as if their lives depended on it.

A success of a homecoming was rounded off with a well-earned two-song encore. Excitingly, this is a band that is clearly continuing to grow in stature. Pretty soon, they'll be eating these sized rooms for breakfast.

The Jezabels - Rosebud

When we first saw The Jezabels supporting Bridezilla in Bondi about 4 years ago, we thought "Yeah, this band has got some serious potential." Fast-forward to today and that potential has been realised to an incredible degree. 2011 ended with sold out shows across Australia on the back of UK and US tours, while accolades included Album Of The Year at the 2011 Rolling Stone Awards, Best Independent Artist at the AIR Awards and ARIA Nominations.

2012 is shaping up to be another big year for the quartet, with fans voting single Endless Summer in at number 9 in the triple j Hottest 100 and more recently the band have taken out the 7th Annual Australian Music Prize, for their debut LP Prisoner and received a nomination for Apra Song Of The Year for Endless Summer. The Jezabels are currently doing a run of sold out shows in Europe and North America, and will be hitting up festivals all over Europe in the summer. Have a look at the brand new clip for Rosebud and see what all the fuss is about.

Highlight of the year
Having the privilege of spending nearly nine months of 2011 traveling around Europe and the United States, I stumbled upon maybe the greatest place on earth, Budapest. Added to its greatness, I had the pleasure of being there with Bobbysix himself.

2011 in words
Fantastically amazing year for music, incredibly disappointing year for Hollywood.

Prediction for 2012
After 2011 came out with the highest number of Hollywood sequels ever, (yes, EVER) Hollywood decides to stop making sequels and instead take a chance on original, independent and thought-provoking cinema...fingers crossed.

Homebake Festival 2011

Bobbysix.com's Editor went to Homebake Festival in Sydney and realised that he is a grumpy old man. Here's why:

It started with a vomiting pumpkin...

Australian festivals are a strange thing. Considering the wonderful weather in this country, there aren't very many camping events, meaning that often festivals are staged in a single day. Therefore, punters take the opportunity to get as fucked up as possible, as quickly as possible. No time to waste. It's like watching three days of Reading footage on fast-forward. And so, in that context, we return to the pumpkin. As I entered the site, I saw two girls dressed as pumpkins, walking side by side. One stopped dead in her tracks and proceeded to projectile puke pretty much everywhere. It was like something out of The Exorcist, had The Exorcist been set in Sydney's Domain on a beautifully sunny summer's afternoon. She wiped her mouth, laughed and carried on with her day. It was 1.50pm. The tone, rather perfectly, had been set.

As the awful 360 proved just how awful Aussie hip-hop can be, I took a wander round the site and remembered that men who wear thongs (flip-flops - English Translation Ed) to festivals annoy the shit out of me almost as much as girls who wear those high-waisted denim cut-offs from which 40 percent of their arse hangs out. It's not a good look, ladies. Not a good look.

Anyway, to the music. Well, The Vines played but no-one really cared because it's no longer 2004. Meanwhile Unknown Mortal Orchestra (good name, by the way) rocked the Rowland S Howard Stage and were followed by the equally excellent Big Scary and  Noah Taylor & The Sloppy Boys.

Next up, technical difficulties meant that Kimbra (above) started 20 minutes late on the Dome Stage. Looking A-fucking-MAY-ZING in red she played a very short set which ended with the brilliant Cameo Lover. Her vocal was perhaps a little low in the mix and the fact that the sound was bleeding - or, in fact, hemorrhaging - from the main stage was pretty annoying. No-one wants to hear Drapht (more fucking Aussie hip-hop) at the best of times, let alone when they're trying to enjoy the soul/disco/pop of Kimbra.

There were irritating sound issues throughout the day. PNAU could be heard over The Triffids, even when standing about ten foot from the stage on which The Triffids were playing, while Gotye's eclectic, imaginative set was somewhat spoilt by horrible, bassy, muddy sound. Still, by that time, many of the crowd were too mashed to care. The girl in front of me at Gotye was the most gurnful individual I have ever seen. Goodness knows how many drugs she had taken but I suspect the answer to have been "lots of drugs." She was gurning so hard that, at one stage, she seemed in danger of swallowing her own head.

Mashed punters and bad sound aside, there were some outstanding moments at Homebake 2011. The Jezabels proved why they have become so popular, so quickly, with a stunning performance. Brilliantly named singer Hayley Mary has something of the Kate Bush about her in terms of her vocal and the band's pop songs were powerful and engaging. Elsewhere, Papa vs Pretty were great, our old mate Ladyhawke played to a full tent, after which Cut Copy had the crowd going mental with their tightly wound indie/dance stuff that let loose at all the right moments. A bit Icehouse, a bit New Order, a lot brilliant, they were the festival's late highlight and certainly worth missing the start of Grinderman for.

Ah, Grinderman. How I should love thee. Nick Cave. Tick. Warren Ellis. Tick. Dirty as fuck songs dripping in sex and grubbiness. Tick. So, why then, when watching them close Homebake 2011 under a clear purple sky, was I constantly thinking "I wish I were watching Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds."? I guess because I wished I were watching Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds. A certain female vocalist who shall remain nameless told Bobbysix.com in the safety of the VIP area that she wasn't staying for their set because it is "mid-life crisis music." Which is actually a brutally fair assessment. Still, mid-life crisis or not, it was still awesome to see Cave hacking at a guitar and Ellis utilising more pedals than you could shake a stick at. But, as a band, they seem to equal less than the sum of their parts. Put it this way, I've never wanted to hear Stagger Lee more in my life than I did at 10.45pm on Saturday.

So, a mixed bag then. Some great performances, some bad sound, some beautiful weather and a vomiting pumpkin. A pretty fair representation of your typical Australian one-day festival.

Getting To Know... Bonfire Nights

Keyboardist/vocalist Nicole Hoaran from London-based Queenslanders, Bonfire Nights, tells Bobbysix.com a bit about the band:

We are the polar opposite of a child's face who has just been told they missed a skateboarding cat wearing a helmet made out of jelly because they were busy talking on the phone with grandpa, or we sound a bit like Blood Red Shoes. Actually this is a quote from a random I met recently from Brighton who refuses to tell me his name. Seriously, we are two Australian girls and a British boy who play alternative psych infused ambient pop. There you have it.

We take inspiration from our surroundings, people, art, design, books, other music, each other, our social escapades... pretty much life in general. We are lucky in that we are all on the same wavelength when it comes to inspiration and what we do with it. We actually just became room-mates, so I suppose that will be inspiration in itself. We try not to second guess what we are making.

Brisbane is 16532 kilometers away! We just relocated from Brisbane to London a month ago. It's surreal to move countries and there are so many ups and downs to settling in... mainly ups for us, luckily. Question: can you fit one drum kit, one Fender twin amp, two guitars, one keyboard, one synth, one pedal board and three Bonfire Nights band members into a London taxi? Answer: YES! Although there have been minor hurdles - like not having a car - everything seems to be falling into place as if we were destined to live here and we don't want to leave! We've played some fun shows in the last month in London and got to support some great Aussie bands such as The Jezabels, Our Mountain, DZ Deathrays and Little Red. We have more shows coming up in the next three months, so come and say hello.

I wish Bonfire Nights had written The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost.

It might surprise people to learn that there is a love affair in the band. Can you guess who?

In the future we are planning to release an EP in the UK. We have been recording some new material and are planning to record more as soon as we get our shit together. Hopefully we will get around to playing some shows across Europe and America and head home for an Australian tour in about a year. For now we are concentrating on songwriting, recording and playing shows in the UK.

Check Bonfire Nights out at their Myspace page and have a squizz at their below video clip:

Getting To Know... Nicole Dora

You may have noticed an unfamiliar name attached to yesterday's film review. With Nicole Dora becoming the latest writer to join BobbySix's team of awesomeness, it's only polite to introduce her to you. So here she is, in her own words:

Writing is so wonderful. But there are times when I could liken the activity to giving birth to a litter of puppies. And not in a good way.

I'd love to interview someone without getting even the slightest bit nervous. Sometimes I remind myself of a tiny, tiny mouse. In an attempt to give a proper answer, I’m going to say Obama, but only because his dog Bo is hell cute and I would love to play puppy tug-of-war with him.

I'm currently listening to my ipod on shuffle because there are so many songs on there that I didn’t even know I had, or know who the hell sings them. And anything by The Jezabels because they are freaking awesome.

Sydney is pretty ace. I never thought to appreciate our harbour until I went to New York and peered into their dirty, dirty harbour (I swear it looked red?). I also never thought to appreciate our amazing beaches until I tried swimming at Coney Island (take my word for it, its fun enough to chill on the wharf).

If I could only listen to three albums for the rest of my life they would be:

Tame Impala - Innerspeaker, because if I was in a situation where I had to listen to only three albums for the rest of my life I would feel like I’m tripping balls, and its fun to trip balls to Tame Impala.

Arcade Fire -The Suburbs

Anything by The Jezabels because they are freaking awesome.

I feel slightly nervous with putting these three choices up so don’t judge me. I promise you albums that narrowly missed out include The National’s High Violet and Warpaint’s The Fool.

When I'm not writing you can find me drinking copious amounts of green tea, teaching myself how to crochet, sweating it out at yoga, wandering up and down King St in Sydney's Newtown, eating Japanese food, eating Indian food, pretty much eating any food that crosses my path, annoying my cat Wally, chilling with my pigeon Lucky, feeding my dog Scruffy, searching for the perfect plastic pink flamingo and figuring out what kind of things I should write in interviews like this!
